History of the Dwyer Awards

The William T. Dwyer Awards for Excellence in Education was established in 1985 to honor outstanding educators from public and private schools in Palm Beach County. Teachers from across the county are nominated by their peers at individual schools in one of five categories: Elementary Education, Middle School, Senior High, Special Programs and Career Education. A sixth category, STEM Education, was added to the 2016 Awards.

The Dwyer Awards is a joint project of the Economic Council of Palm Beach County and the Education Foundation of Palm Beach County to honor dedicated public and private school teachers and their quest to improve education throughout the state of Florida. It is held annually at the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts. A selection committee chooses five finalists for each category. A judging committee interviews each of the finalists and then a winner is selected in each category.

How Are Recipients Chosen?

Nominees are selected by their peers from each school. Through a rigorous judging process, a panel of business and community leaders dedicated to education screens each application multiple times with the six finalists from each category selected through face-to-face interviews. Each award recipient receives $3,000 and a crystal award. The remaining finalists are recognized with a certificate of achievement and a $500 check. All nominees, finalists, and award recipients will be honored at a reception and ceremony on Tuesday, May 8, 2018, at the Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts.
